January 23, 1973 – June 24, 2022
For almost 50 years it has been considered a legal right to murder the unborn in our nation. Over 60 million babies have been slaughtered in this holocaust – a sacrifice to the spirit of the age at the altar of sexual freedom (immorality) and convenience (idolatry, the worship and prioritization of self). Sixty million. That’s over twice the total population of Texas today.
In 2008 I wrote an article titled, “How Many More?” wherein I compared the number of children killed to the total casualties of World War 2. I also stated that, “The solution is not the outlawing of sin, it is the redemption of sinners.” Ultimately, the problem is one of sin and rebellion to God and His Word.
With the overturning of two major abortion rulings from the Supreme Court today (Roe and Casey), we should rightly rejoice and praise the Lord. This 6 to 3 ruling is monumental, but it is not enough. A battle has been won, no doubt, but we still see our nation being consumed by a culture of death.
Things will change now for us in Texas, as our state legislature passed a law (HB 1280 – Human Life Protection Act of 2021) last year that is set to trigger, or become effective, 30 days after Roe is overturned. The law upholds that life begins at conception and makes abortion a first- or second-degree felony for any doctor who performs one, except when there is a “risk of the pregnant female’s death; or a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function.”
This demonstrates for us why, while we rejoice, we also understand that a legal and political solution is never enough. The truth is that this legal victory does not abolish abortion. It does not change hearts. Only the gospel can transform a sinner, removing a murderous heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26; Matthew 15:19).
Yes, we want to defend all human life. Yes, we want increased options for adoption. Yes, we want to be sure that our concern for babies doesn’t end once they are born. But no, we cannot stop praying for our nation, repenting collectively of our sins (Daniel 9), and pleading for both the mercy and justice of God.
Our nation is falling apart at the seams. These States are less and less United. But we, the church, are the people of God – our citizenship is in heaven. This world is not our home. We must set our eyes on the only true hope that we have – the gospel of Jesus Christ, whereby He saves sinners, sanctifies saints, and through which He promises that He is coming back soon.
Praise the Lord for His mercy shown today. Stay on guard!
1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
