Concerning the midterm election today:

It is not about Republican victory. It is not about the Righteous ruling. It is not about Reform. It is not about Revival.

It is about Repentance.

People will rejoice, rightly so, when conservatives in every party and without a party vote to turn back the Marxist agenda of the current administration. When tea party candidates and conservatives are elected in a flood let us not put our hope in politicians, not even those who follow in the footsteps of Ronaldus Magnus.

It is not enough to elect righteous leaders. Even if every person in Congress was a truly born again Spirit filled disciple of Jesus Chist we are still a nation under the judgment and wrath of God.

“To whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” (Luke 12:48).

In last Sunday’s sermon we heard the Word of God that tells us there was never a king like Josiah (2 Kings 23:25).

“Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.”

But verse 26 begins with the dreaded word “Nevertheless”:

26 Nevertheless the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, with which His anger was aroused against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked Him. 27 And the LORD said, “I will also remove Judah from My sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the house of which I said, ‘My name shall be there.’”

There we see that though the Bible tells us how righteous Josiah was and how noble his achievements for the Lord, it also tells us that in spite of all his work to bring reform, revival, and obedience to the Word of God, the sins of the people under Manasseh had been so great that the judgments prophesied were still going to come to pass.

A nation must repent and deal with its sin before God if they hope to escape judgment, and even then at times, the reformation is too little too late and what a nation has sowed toward sin it will reap in the wrath of God.

We may elect a new class and vote out many incumbents, but until we, the Church of Jesus Christ, repent of our sin and pray like Daniel prayed* (Daniel 9), taking personal responsibility for the sins of our nation, we will continue to be turned over to destruction.

Four thousand babies in the womb are murdered every day in our nation. Countless others are murdered by abortifacient birth control methods like the pill and IUDs. “Alternate lifestyles” of gross immorality of every kind are given special treatment. Parents are losing rights over their own children. State schools indoctrinate children in the false religions of humanism and Darwinian evolution. Families in and out of the church are disintegrating. The divorce rate has only dropped because more couples are living together without being married. Good is called evil and evil is called good. Everything is tolerated but the Truth of God’s Word. (And this is a very short list of our offenses before God as a nation.)

And while civic responsibility is important for every citizen, especially believers, it is not a cure. The only cure is found in the Word of God, and we in the Church must be the first to humble ourselves, repent, and seek His face.

12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, 14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. (2 Chronicles 7:12-15)
